The little Mario fan

I’m back! And I’m happy to say I’ve got a few things to share with you. I’m gonna start with one of my fave makes; Mario power ups. With my lil sister-in-laws birthday coming up it was the perfect excuse to make these super cute Mario characters. I should tell you now, we’re big Mario fans (some more than others… quote Tree “Are Mario and Luigi brothers?”- April 2012), so don’t be surprised if these become a regular fixture to my blog!

With the whole Mario world to choose from, I decided to make a mushroom, bomb and invincibility star (choices mainly based on what yarn I had around!) They’re pretty teeny tiny, about 5-7cm because I wanted them to be able to fit into a small set of shelves my SiL has.

When it came to the invincibility star, I had a good few goes myself before searching online for a pattern. After having a look around, I decided I wasn’t keen on the  method most people used- making two flat stars and sewing them together. I prefer to make things in one round with as few joins as possible. I also thought that the method of making the star (a central circle in one round, with the points made in rows) meant that you get an interrupted texture because of the interrupted crochet pattern.

Anyway, I ended up winging it, starting from the tip of the star and working downwards in a continuous round to create a 3D shape. I think it worked quite well but the pattern could do with some refining before I share it with you guys so I’m gonna hold back on that pattern (and truth be told, I didn’t write it down…) But not wanting to disappoint, here are my free patterns for the mushroom and bomb. Mario Mushroom

3.75mm crochet hook. Repeat anything within the *. Finished size ~5cm

Mushroom cap & body

Using red yarn:
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook
(6sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
R3: 2 sc in each st around (24)
R4-6: SC 24
R7: *Dec 1, sc4*: repeat 4 times (20)
R8: *Dec 1, sc3*: repeat 4 times (16)

Change to white yarn:
R9-12: SC 16

Sew eyes (see Mario eyes diagram for method), stuff firmly.

R13: *Dec 1 *: repeat 8 times (8)
R14: *Dec 1 *: repeat 8 times (4)
Fasten off and weave loose end.

Spots

Make 3.
Using white yarn:
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook (6sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Use the tail to stitch to the mushroom cap.

Mario Bomb

3.75mm crochet hook. Repeat anything within the *. Finished size ~6cm

Body
Using black yarn:
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook (6sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
R3: 2 sc in each st around (24)
R4-6: SC 24
R7: *Dec 1, sc2*: repeat 6 times (18)

Sew eyes using white yarn. Stuff firmly.

R8: *Dec 1, sc1*: repeat 6 times (12)
R9: *Dec1*: repeat 6 times (6)
Fasten off and weave loose end.

Wick
Using yellow yarn:
Ch5
SC 5 back down the chain
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Use the tail to stitch to the wick base->

Wick base
Using grey yarn:
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook (6sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
R3: SC12 in front loops only
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Use the tail to stitch to the top of the bomb. You can lightly stuff the base if you want it to be a bit sturdier.

Feet
Make 2.
Using yellow yarn:
Ch6
R1: Working around the chain:

• 2DC in loop, two chains down
• HDC 3
• Ch1
• HDC 2
• DC1
• 2DC
• Sl st to the top of the next DC along

R2: SC around (12)
R3: *Dec1*: repeat 6 times (6)
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Use the tail to sew to the body.
